Meet your personal driver at your hotel lobby and start an amazing daytrip in the Umbria region. Your first stop will be the town of Assisi, home of the Umbrian religious spirituality. We suggest starting the tour from the upper side of the town so that the downhill itinerary will be more comfortable. Take your time to discover the heart of the city starting from the St. Clare Basilica: Clare is the founder of the order of the Poor Clares. Continuing your walk, you will reach Piazza del Comune and next, St. Francis Basilica, jewel in the crown of the Franciscan spirituality and cradle of the medieval European art. The Basilica was founded by Pope Gregory IX and is an architectural masterpiece containing some of the finest paintings of medieval
Italian art, from Cimabue to Giotto, Simone Martini, Pietro Lorenzetti, Jacopo Torriti and Pietro Cavallini. The frescoed cycles of the Old and New Testament and the panels on the life of St. Francis reach the climax on the medieval theology whilst the Franciscan Order was growing in power. After relaxing lunch time (not included), don’t walk back to the up of the hill, your personal driver will meet you at the foot of the hill (near St. Francis Basilica) and continue your daytrip to Spello, that shares with Assisi a similar pink colored stone aspect, the same alleys privacy and unexpected glimpses. Take your time to admire Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, with its simultaneous presence of some Perugino works, two frescoes flanking the high altar, and Pinturicchio’s cycle of frescoes within the Cappella Bella. The three striking Roman gates: Consular, Venus and Urbica Gates. And if you fancy a further walk, reach the upper Belvedere, which provides a fine view of the whole valley. At the end of the tour your personal driver
will lead you back to your location.
