Italy seems a minuscule country consisting of only 125,000 square miles, but can boast more than bigger countries in the world as it is extremely rich in history, culture and nature. Going beyond the usual clichés about the beauty of Rome, Florence, Venice, or the Sicily and Sardinia islands, you can discover a great variety of artistic and environmental treasures that are often unknown outside the national borders and are worthy of being shared.
By exploring Italy from the north we discover some places you should visit in Trentino-Alto Adige region. From the mountaintops of this Italian region’s natural environment you can admire the breath-taking views to the endless green of the valleys. The uncontaminated nature is the frame of a “history and mystery-painted” picture, of which the numerous castles – situated on rocks and hills or in the middle of woods and lakes – depict one of the most evocative and charming images. In fact, the castles built over the centuries in Trentino-Alto Adige can tell you both its past events – from the control of trade through the valleys and the Alps to the defense of noble families’ estates – and its old legends.
Castel Thun – located on a hill close to the village of Vigo di Ton, in the lower area of Val di Non – is one of the most interesting examples of the castle architecture in Trentino. It was built in the middle of the 13th century and enlarged and changed in the course of time. It was the house of the Thun family, a powerful family of episcopal feudatories who owned several eminent residences.
The gothic civilian-military building is surrounded by a fortification structure composed of towers, bastions, a moat and a patrol path. The high historical and cultural value of the castle derives also from the copious artistic décor, from the marvelous “Bishop’s Room” – the accommodation of the Prince-Bishop Sigismondo Alfonso Thun – covered with Swiss pine wood, and from the library, which in the past contained 10,000 volumes – currently conserved in the Archive of the Trento Province and representing a rich documentation of the local history.
Castel Toblino – situated in the municipality of Calavino, in Valle dei Laghi (Lakes Valley) – is one of the lake fortresses in Trentino. It was built on a small peninsula in the middle of a lake of the same name around the 12th century, but the current structure is the result of a rebuilding in the 16th century. The castle now appears like a sixteenth-century noble residence and preserves only a few Middle Ages features on its curtain wall. Castel Toblino was owned by Toblino lords at its origin, but it was acquired by Da Campo family in the 13th century and became Trento Princes-Bishops property – in particular Madruzzo’s – in the 16th century.
The fascination of this place depends also on the fairy tales and love stories that have risen on the shores of Toblino Lake and inside the castle. One of these tales narrates that the fairies used to live on the peninsula in the middle of the lake in the past and there was also a small temple dedicated to them in the 3rd century, which is mentioned on a headstone on the castle’s porch.
Another tale is about the forbidden relationship between the last Prince-Bishop of the Madruzzo dynasty – Carlo Emanuele – and a woman called Claudia Particella. The Prince-Bishop was punished because of his shameful behavior when one day Claudia and her brother were sailing on the lake to get to the castle. Suddenly the boat turned upside down and they drowned. According to the legend, during a full moon you can still see their ghosts on the lake.
Above is just a couple of examples of all the wonderful castles in Trentino, which enable you to immerse yourself in the history of the area and to experience the past atmospheres – like in the case of Castel Thun – or to discover mysteries and idyllic places – like in the case of Castel Toblino. Today some castles are public properties and house museums, exhibitions, theater performances, concerts, historical commemorations and typical products tastings; others are private properties, but you can often visit part of them. Certainly, exploring and admiring these places is always magical.

Castelli Trentini tra Storia & Mistero
L’Italia, con una superificie di appena 324,000 km quadrati, sembra un minuscolo Paese, ma gode di una ricchezza storica, culturale e naturale che non ha nulla da invidiare ad altri stati nel mondo. Allontanandosi dai luoghi comuni che esaltano la bellezza di Roma, Firenze, Venezia o delle isole di Sicilia e Sardegna, si svelano una varietá di tesori artistici ed ambientali spesso sconosciuti al di fuori dei confini nazionali e dotati di un fascino che merita di essere scoperto e condiviso.
Cominciamo ad esplorare l’Italia dall’estremo nord, per rivelare alcuni dei luoghi che si possono ammirare nella regione del Trentino-Alto Adige. Questa regione si distingue per il suo patrimonio naturale, dal verde sterminato delle sue valli fino ai paesaggi mozzafiato che si possono contemplare dalla cima delle sue montagne. La natura incontaminata fa da cornice ad un quadro dipinto di storia e mistero, di cui i numerosi castelli – arroccati su un’altura, immersi in un bosco o eretti in mezzo ad un lago – rappresentano una delle immagini piú suggestive ed affascinanti. I castelli del Trentino-Alto Adige, costruiti nel corso dei secoli, ne narrano infatti sia le vicende passate – tra il controllo dei traffici attraverso le vallate e le Alpi e la difesa dei possedimenti da parte delle casate nobiliari – sia le antiche leggende.
Castel Thun – situato su una collina nei pressi del paese di Vigo di Ton, nella bassa Val di Non – è uno degli esempi piú interessanti dell’architettura castellana trentina. Fu costruito nella metà del XIII secolo e piú volte ampliato e modificato nel corso del tempo. Era la sede della potente famiglia dei Thun, antichi feudatari vescovili che possedevano diverse residenze di prestigio.
La struttura civile-militare di stile gotico è circondata da un sistema di fortificazioni costituito da torri, bastioni lunati, fossato e cammino di ronda. Il grande valore monumentale e culturale del castello deriva anche dalla copiositá di arredi d’arte, dalla splendida “Stanza del Vescovo” – alloggio del Principe-Vescovo Sigismondo Alfonso Thun – rivestita di legno di cirmolo, e dalla biblioteca, i cui 10,000 volumi – oggi conservati presso l’Archivio provinciale di Trento – costituiscono un ricchissimo archivio della storia locale.
Castel Toblino – collocato nel territorio comunale di Calavino, nella Valle dei Laghi – reppresenta invece una delle fortezze lacustri del Trentino. Fu costruito su una piccola penisola in mezzo all’omonimo lago attorno al XII secolo, ma la struttura attuale è il risultato di una riedificazione del XVI secolo. Oggi quindi il castello appare come una dimora nobiliare cinquecentesca, che conserva rari tratti medievali nella sua muratura. In origine era posseduto dai signori Toblino, ma nel XIII secolo fu acquisito dai Da Campo e nel XVI secolo divenne bene diretto dai Principi Vescovi di Trento e in particolare dai Madruzzo.
L’incanto di questo luogo nasce anche dalle leggende di fate e storie d’amore che sono sorte tra le rive del Lago di Toblino e le mura del castello. Una di queste narra che in passato la penisola al centro del lago era abitata dalle fate, alle quali nel III secolo era dedicato un antico tempietto, menzionato su una lapide all’interno del portico del castello.
Un’altra storia racconta della relazione proibita tra l’ultimo Principe Vescovo della dinastia Madruzzo – Carlo Emanuele – e una donna di nome Claudia Particella. La condotta indegna del Principe-Vescovo fu punita un giorno in cui Claudia e suo fratello stavano attraversando il lago in barca per giungere al castello. La barca si capovolse e i due morirono annegati. Secondo la leggenda, nelle notti di luna piena è possibile vedere ancora i loro spiriti sulle acque del lago.
Questi sono solo due esempi tra tutti i magnifici castelli del Trentino, che permettono di immergersi nella storia del territorio e di rivivere le atmosfere passate – come Castel Thun – o di scoprire misteri e luoghi idilliaci – come Castel Toblino. Oggi alcuni di questi castelli sono di proprietá pubblica ed ospitano musei, esposizioni, rappresentazioni teatrali, concerti, rievocazioni storiche, degustazioni di prodotti tipici, altri sono di proprietá privata, ma sono spesso parzialmente visitabili. Di certo, esplorare e ammirare questi luoghi è sempre una vera magia.
